A "Missa solemnis" for only two voices and organ? What at first seems surprising is actually available in this first edition: Deacon Zänkl, the most important composer of the Bavarian Franciscan Province at the time, wrote this sonorous ordinarium for two high voices and concert organ (manualiter) in the typically festive style of the Southern German late Baroque. The work, with its highly variable settings, is characterised by a great joy in music-making and a sometimes cheerful gesture. With a performance time of a good 35 minutes (including Credo), it can also become a veritable highlight in a concert for solo voices, in addition to its use in church services.
