Bach composed the cantata "Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden" BWV 6 for Easter Monday in 1725. A choral cantata was actually planned for this holiday as well, but the choral cantata year breaks off just before Easter 1725 for an unexplained reason. For BWV 6, Bach drew on the text of a poet who had already set several of his texts to music in his first Leipzig year (the use of two chorale movements in the same structure is striking). From the Gospel of Easter Monday, the story of the disciples of Emmaus, the theme is solely that of daylight running out and the fear of being left alone. A truly magnificent choral movement opens the cantata. The first chorale for soprano and violoncello piccolo, which Bach later included in his "Schübler chorales", is also well-known outside of the cantata.
