Bach composed the choral cantata Wo soll ich fliehen hin BWV 5 for the 19th Sunday after Trinity in 1724. The cantata belongs to Bach's 2nd Leipzig year, the choral cantata year. The opening movement is characterized by an instrumental ritornello whose theme is derived from the chorale melody. In addition, there is an ear-catching "fleeting" motif consisting of three semiquavers followed by a staccato quaver. The first aria holds a riddle in store: The tenor is joined by an unfortunately unmarked obbligato instrument, which comes up with long slurs and many chord breaks, but whose identity remains a mystery: Viola? Violoncello piccolo? In the following recitative, the alto voice is joined by the chorale melody played by the oboe. This is followed by a bass aria with a virtuoso solo trumpet: "Silence, army of hell, you do not make me despondent!". After a secco, a simple chorale movement concludes the cantata.
