Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote the "Sea Songs" for the British Military Band. Through his studies of the musical heritage of England, he naturally also knew the many English sailor songs. He has processed three of them in this work: Princess Royal, Admiral Benbow and Portsmouth.
The form of the work is in four parts (the last part is a recapitulation of the first part), the instrumentation is uncomplicated and transparent.
