"Machet die Tore weit" is perhaps the best-known composition by Andreas Hammerschmidt. Today, however, it is usually performed in a form that was not written by the composer: significantly shortened, with altered part-writing and less text. Carus is now making this popular piece accessible to choirs in its more harmonious original form. Under the influence of Heinrich Schütz, Andreas Hammerschmidt and other composers in central Germany created sacred vocal compositions with a carefully modern touch. Due to their often easy performability and catchy music, they enjoyed widespread popularity in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Even today, the music, characterized by song-like melodies, provides easy access to the compositions of the 17th century. The well-known arranged version remains available (Carus 1.007).
