Ensembles for whom Schubert's "great" masses are not accessible will find a pleasant alternative in this compact and smaller scored mass from 1816. In terms of its outward dimensions, it is a Missa brevis (approx. 25 minutes in performance time), and the compositional texture is comparatively simple without, however, lacking the typical Schubertian "tone" in harmony and melody. The wind parts added later by the composer are to be considered ad libitum, as the work was originally only intended for the southern German-Austrian "church trio" instrumentation (2 violins and organ).
