Franz Schubert's Mass in A flat major: A work that occupied the composer time and again, with which, in his words, he strove for the "highest in art" - and perhaps only wanted to achieve a position at the Viennese court after all. In any case, his efforts to present a new, individual mass led to unconventional solutions (and an unusual key), a renunciation of simple acclamation, a reduction of pathos in favor of a compositionally extravagant elaboration, especially of the first parts: a glamorous Missa solemnis for the solemn arrangement of the court service, at the same time the public presentation of the artistic competence of an ambitious composer.
