The six-movement Circus Suite is a musical journey through a circus performance. The first movement, Entry Music, portrays the parade of the circus people who walk into the circus ring at the beginning. Clowns, the second movement, is filled with colourful pranks by the clowns. The Rope Dancer is a graceful high wire act, which is portrayed by a lyrical euphonium solo in 3/4 meter (Moderato). A technical challenge for the clarinets is the fourth movement, The Juggler. An exciting and breath-taking fifth movement is the Trapeze Artists with the absolute climax: a successful Salto Mortale. In the Finale, all artists reappear in the ending parade of a splendid circus performance. Hidas wrote the Circus Suite based on his personal imagination, without having been inspired by a trip to the circus.
