It is always fascinating to marvel at the shape and expressiveness that old-fashioned Christmas carols from the German-speaking world are able to maintain when viewed 'through English glasses'. The Welsh composer Robert Jones, who enjoys immense popularity in this country, adequately takes up the noble simplicity of the melody and the intimate text expressing the devotion to the newborn child and wraps both in a thoroughly composed choral movement of tender melodiousness and English melodiousness. The result is a German-English 'co-production' that will leave no singer or listener cold!
