The composition 'The Waterbeggars', a magnificent and colourful work written in 1995, was inspired by the Eighty Years' War between Spain and The Netherlands (1568-1648). The Waterbeggars formed the army of the Dutch resistance. The four parts of the composition refer to the highlights of the war.
I. The open Gate of Den Briel.
II. The blockade of the Waterways.
III. The defeat on the Haarlemmermeer.
IV. Alcmaria Victrix (The victory starts near Alkmaar).
