The Mozart researcher Robert Münster established in 1965 that in a copy of 13 "Tantum ergo" settings by the Mainz cathedral conductor Johann Zach (1699-1773), the last "Tantum ergo" in B flat major is largely identical to K. 142 by Mozart. Zach's composition comprises only 43 bars instead of 63, and there is still no Amen coda. Mozart apparently revised Zach's composition for an unknown reason and extended it by a third by adding the Amen coda.
