The "Requiem" by Gabriel Fauré is available from Carus in two versions; the "symphonic version" completed in 1900 and a reconstructed version with small orchestra from 1889. | Critical edition of one of the most frequently performed Requiem settings - Reconstruction of an "1889 version" with a reduced instrumentation compared to the final version of the work - Detailed preface in three languages - Critical report with information on the sources, edition and readings | The "symphonic version" of Gabriel Fauré's "Requiem", published in 1901, was the result of a 13-year compositional process. Starting from a five-movement original version for strings, harp and organ, the composer had added two further movements in succession for performances and gradually expanded the instrumentation. The present reconstruction of a "version with small orchestra" is distinguished from other such attempts by the fact that for the first time it offers the work not in a mixed version, but in its form from 1889. This differs from the final version both musically and in terms of scoring, as it does not yet use flutes, clarinets and bassoons and only two horns. As the offertory in 1889 did not yet include choral parts, the appendix to the edition contains the offertory of the "symphonic version".
