Tree Dance - Lake Dance - Fire Dance
When the wind passes through the trees, they begin to sway together, to dance. Touched by the wind, the shallow lake ripples, the light glitters in it and waves dance. But when a tiny fire is caught by the wind, it creates a wild fire dance that destroys entire forests.
I have translated these images into music.
If you observe the wind, you will notice that it makes different rhythms dance: in the trees soft, irregularly swaying, in the fire just as irregular, but wilder, more tingling. Only in the lake does he make the waves dance in regular, calm rhythms.
The work begins with five rigid sounds; they symbolize a calm, still unmoving group of trees. These trees recur in the other two movements: at the beginning of the second they reflect in the water, and at the end of the third they are torn apart by fire.
I was inspired to write this music at a brass band competition in Montreux:
On the one hand, I was overwhelmed by the very high playing level of the brass bands and saw all the sonic possibilities spread out before me; on the other hand, I had the brilliant idea during my lunch break at Lac Leman, in whose waves a light breeze made the sunlight dance.
When composing, I started from the usual brass band formation (see above). This formation is necessary to bring out the different interplays within the band.
