Camille Saint-Saëns composed his Oratorio de Noël for five vocal solos, mixed choir, strings, organ and harp in 1858. The work, which is sung in Latin, is based on texts from the Old and New Testaments, the Gospels, Psalms and the Catholic Christmas liturgy. Distinctive chamber music instrumentation, lyrical solo parts and a simple choir combine to create a pastoral mood and make this Christmas Oratorio one of the composer's most frequently performed works. In addition to the original version, the work is also offered in an arrangement in which the vocal parts are only accompanied by the organ. A singable German text version is also available for German-speaking countries.
