Mozart's "Dominikusmesse" was written for the first mass of Cajetan Hagenauer, the later Father Dominicus, in Salzburg in 1769. In terms of type, it is a "solemn mass" with a large orchestra, including brass instruments, as was celebrated on high church feasts and other particularly prestigious spiritual occasions. Mozart further emphasizes this solemn character with a slow introduction at the beginning of the Kyrie and two extensive fugues at the end of the Gloria and Credo. Although Mozart wrote the work at the age of 13, it already surpasses much of the average church music of his time.
