Hans Heusser, born on 8 August 1892 in Zurich and died on 27 October 1942 in St. Gallen, was a famous Swiss composer and conductor. He became known not only for his wind music works, but also for his role as a pianist in the founding period of "Dada Zurich" around 1916. Although he never belonged to the core of the movement, he attracted a great deal of attention, which culminated in a "Soirée Hans Heusser" on 25 May 1917. From 1924 he lived in St. Gallen as the city music director.
The "St. Gallen March" is one of Hans Heusser's best-known works. It is a composition for wind orchestra that he wrote during his time as city music director in St. Gallen. The march is part of the repertoire of many wind orchestras and is often performed at festive occasions in the city of St. Gallen and beyond. Heusser composed this march to strengthen and celebrate the musical identity and solidarity with St. Gallen.
The first print of the St. Gallen March was published by Gebrüder Hug und Co in Zurich. In 1979, the publishing rights were transferred to the music publisher Emil Ruh in Adliswil and the current version is published by Ruh Musik AG.
Gilbert Tinner is an outstanding composer and arranger for wind music, whose works are known for their creative variety and tonal brilliance. The new arrangement from his pen was carefully renovated in 2024 as an edition 100 years SGBV (St. Galler Blasmusik Verband) for the anniversary with great respect for the original manuscript. Complete scores for wind orchestra and brass band are available; the individual parts are in marching book format.
