In Central Europe, and particularly in southern Germany, Catholic processions are often accompanied by brass bands. The pieces played are usually hymns or processional marches that are intended to promote devotion and make it easier for everyone to walk together. The sides of the streets and houses are often decorated with little flags, fresh twigs and flowers. This tradition has been maintained for centuries, particularly in the foothills of the Alps and in the Austrian Alpine region. Over the years, the music publisher Rundel has published a series of wonderful processional marches for this occasion.
