The Advent cantata Machet die Tore weit has long been one of Telemann's most frequently performed church music works. Among the manuscripts that survive the cantata is a significant testimony to the esteem in which J. S. Bach held his then more famous Hamburg colleague: a copy of the score in the hand of the Thomaskantor, intended for a Leipzig performance of the cantata on 1 Advent 1734 (i.e. in the immediate vicinity of the first performance of the Christmas Oratorio). Of the four vocal soloists, the soprano and bass, who are each assigned an aria, are indispensable. However, the short alto solos in the opening chorus can easily be sung by a choir voice, and the tenor recitative can be sung by the soprano.This work is now also available in carus music, the choir app!
