Whoever thinks that the church music history of the 19th century has definitely been written and that there are no more essential discoveries to be made here, will be amazed by a work like the 24th Psalm by the Kassel composer Hugo Staehle: In the few years of his compositional career, the young deceased genius created works of maturity and beauty, which - if he had been granted more years - would probably have helped him to a career among the greatest masters of his time. The early Romantic work, which lasts almost 10 minutes, is suitable for year-round concert use, even during the Advent season ('Raise, your gates, the head, let him in, the king of fame'), for which traditionally only a limited selection of orchestral literature is available.
