The Concerto for Fanfare Orchestra was composed in 2003 as a result of the project New Life On Stage, an initiative of the Muziekgroep Nederland. The aim of this project was to give new impulses to composing for wind orchestras.
In the concert for fanfare band the parameter colour plays a prominent role. To this end, the fanfare orchestra was expanded with instruments such as harp, double bass and a group of Mallets. The first part begins with an "introduction" in which dark colours predominate. At the same time a number of building blocks are brought into the limelight, which will continue to play an important role. The following Allegro begins with an angular, march-like theme. In contrast to this is the lyrical theme that follows.
These two dates determine the musical content of the first movement in all kinds of interactions. Part 2: Andante con moto consists of a three-part structure with a climax at the end. At the heart of this movement, a nostalgic lullaby prevails, played by the baritones. The third movement is a scherzo. Three thematic dates, consisting of an ascending triad, a rotating motif and a signal-like theme, determine the content of this movement. In the end, this part turns itself upside down and culminates in a - from a blowing point of view - enormous feat of strength.
