The arrangement of chorales had already played a major role during Mendelssohn's apprenticeship with Zelter, and his preoccupation with the Protestant chorale even runs through his symphonic and oratorio works. The particularly intensive examination of Bach's work in connection with the revival of the St. Matthew Passion led to a series of cantatas on well-known chorales for choir, instruments and sometimes solos. They are a great enrichment not only for cantata services.
