Come, Sweet Freedom is based on the folk song "All My Trials". The origins of this traditional song, which is particularly well known in Africa and America, are unclear, but it is classified as a spiritual due to its biblical and religious content. The lyrics describe the harsh reality of slavery and see death as the only way out of bondage and suffering, towards peace and freedom. In the most famous verse of the song, a mother sings to her little child: "Hush little baby, don't you cry. You know your mama's bound to die. All my trials, Lord, soon will be over." Based on this haunting message, American composer James L. Hosay chose the title "Come, Sweet Freedom" for his very personal and moving setting of the well-known classic. However, the piece is much more than a mere arrangement. Based on a dialogue between oboe and clarinet, Hosay develops a moving choral fantasy that expresses the deeply sad and hopeful message of the music in a special way.
