The three movements 'Klage am Wegrand' for solo clarinet were written at the suggestion of the Zug clarinettist Ulrich Zimmermann. They were premiered 1982 as interlude music at the vernissage of the Exhibition 'the Way of the Cross', a new work cycle by the Swiss painter Franz Bucher.'Lamentation by the wayside' refers to the lamentations of the women mourning Jesus on his way to Golgotha.
