A rhapsody is defined as a "folkloristic narrative piece". Kees Vlak goes even further in his "Kilkenny Rhapsody", because his intention is to capture the essence of the people and the country, and to musically realize geographical features. Ireland is a treasure trove for a rhapsodic approach, because in addition to romantic melodies such as "The Foggy Day" or "The Gentle Maiden", popular dances such as the jig, reel or hornpipe, often characterized by the sound of the flute and the snare drum, offer wonderful musical possibilities. Out of the dense fog, the "Green Island" rises up in silhouette"Éire", as the Irish call their beloved homeland. The songs and dances of unmistakably Celtic origin then alternate, leading to an effective climax. The fog returns: the theme of a dance can be heard in the background.
