Toledo is located in the center of Spain, not far from the capital Madrid. The history of this city dates back to the time before Christ, and accordingly there are countless important buildings from a wide range of eras. When composer Stefan Schwalgin visited Toledo, he was so fascinated by the palpable contrast between history and modern urban life that he spontaneously decided to create a small musical monument to the city. His composition "Toledo" makes appropriate use of the harmonic-melodic language of traditional Spanish music, dressing it in the stylistic garb of modern popular music.Two sections of the orchestra each take center stage as soloists in the composition: first the high woodwind section, beginning with the flutes, joined by the solo clarinet and then building to a tutti section.
