As one of the three canticles of the New Testament, Mary's song of praise, the Magnificat, has occupied a prominent place in church music since time immemorial. Telemann's setting of Luther's German version of the text impressively demonstrates both the composer's inventiveness and his ability to incorporate a variety of musical forms into the unity of Baroque formal architecture: four solo movements, orchestrated in a colorful alternation, are juxtaposed with four choral movements with an emphatically uniform design, all four in six-eighths time and in motet style with colla parte instruments.
