The composition of the Christmas Mass was inspired by Marc-Antoine Charpentier's "Mass de minuit" (1643-1704), in which Charpentier used French Christmas songs such as "Ou s'en vont ces guays bergers" or "Joseph est bien marié". The simple three-part movement (soprano, alto, male voice) is accompanied by the organ. The music becomes more colourful by including a melody instrument such as flute, recorder, violin or oboe.
